Anthocoris nemorum (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) as predator of cabbage pests-voracity and prey preference Organic Eprints
Simonsen, Marie-Louise Rugholm; Enkegaard, Annie; Bang, Camilla Nordborg; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Laboratory experiments were performed with adult female Anthocoris nemorum (Linnaeus) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) at 20°C ±1°C, L16:D8, 60-70% RH to determine voracity and preference on cabbage aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), diamondback moth larvae (Plutella xylostella L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) and Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) (model species for cabbage thrips (Thrips angusticeps Uzel) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)). When offered individually, A. nemorum readily accepted all three species with no significant differences in consumption. When aphids and moth larvae were offered simultaneously, A. nemorum showed preference for the latter (numbers eaten and biomass consumed)....

Bekæmpelse af hindbærsnudebillen Organic Eprints
Wibe, Atle; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Without effective means the strawberry blossom weevil can cause great yield losses in strawberry production. The weevils lay eggs in flower buds and partially severs the bud from the plant. By developing traps baited with pheromones and plant volatiles we search to manage weevil populations to reduce damage on the strawberry plants.

Bevar naturens egen regulering Organic Eprints
Meyling, Nicolai V.; Sigsgaard, Lene.

Blomsterbræmmer i æbleplantagerne Organic Eprints
Sigsgaard, Lene.

Combining 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, the major flower volatile of wild strawberry Fragaria vesca, with the aggregation pheromone of the strawberry blossom weevil Anthonomus rubi improves attraction Organic Eprints
Wibe, Atle; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Cross, Jerry; Bichao, Helena; Fountain, Michelle; Liblikas, Ilme; Sigsgaard, Lene.
The aggregation pheromone of strawberry blossom weevil [Anthonomus rubi Herbst (Col.: Curculionidae)], a 1:4:1 blend of Grandlure I, II and racemic lavadulol, has been available for pest monitoring for several years but shows low attractancy. Attempts to control A. rubi using the pheromone alone were also unsuccessful. This paper reports the finding that addition of the major flower volatile from wild strawberry flowers [Fragaria vesca L. (Rosaceae)], 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (comprising 98% of the volatiles emitted from wild strawberry flowers), to the aggregation pheromone increased trap catches by over two fold compared to the pheromone alone. There was no significant difference between the response of overwintered or summer emerged adults. Field trials in...

Combining plant volatiles and pheromones to catch two insect pests in the same trap: Examples from two berry crops. Organic Eprints

Most horticultural crops are attacked by more than one insect pest. As broad-spectrum chemical control options are becoming increasingly restricted, there is a need to develop novel control methods. Semiochemical attractants are available for three important horticultural pests, strawberry blossom weevil, Anthonomus rubi Herbst (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Hemiptera: Miridae) and raspberry beetle, Byturus tomentosus deGeer (Coleoptera: Byturidae). Traps targeting more than one pest species would be more practical and economical for both monitoring and mass trapping than traps for single-species. In this study we aimed to (1) improve the effectiveness of existing traps for insect pests in...

Comment attirer deux ravageurs des framboises dans un même piège? Organic Eprints
Baroffio, Catherine; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Cross, Jerry; Fountain, Michelle; Guibert, Virginie; Hall, David; Ralle, Baiba; Rogivue, Aude; Sigsgaard, Lene; Trandem, Nina; Wibe, Atle.

Matray, Silvia; Herz, Annette; Pfiffner, Lukas; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Research institutes and universities of nine European countries are involved in the research project EcoOrchard to develop appropriate strategies to promote functional agro-biodiversity in organic pome fruit production. Therefore field trials have been laid out at different sites in seven member states in 2015, where flower strips were sown into the inter-rows of the orchards. Natural antagonists like Syrphidae, Coccinelidae and parasitoids of codling moth are supposed to be promoted with these additional floral ressources. Besides faunal and floristic studies, practical methods and indicators have been worked out to monitor functional biodiversity.

Strawberry blossom weevil (SBW), Anthonomus rubi Herbst (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and European tarnished plant bug (ETB), Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Hetereoptera: Miridae), cause significant damage to strawberry and raspberry crops. Using the SBW aggregation pheromone and ETB sex pheromone we optimized and tested a single trap for both species. A series of field experiments in crops and seminatural habitats in five European countries tested capture of the target pests and the ability to avoid captures of beneficial arthropods. A Unitrap containing a trapping agent of water and detergent and with a cross vane was more efficient at capturing both species compared to traps which incorporated glue as a trapping agent. Adding a green cross vane deterred...

Design, implementation and management of perennial flower strips to promote functional agrobiodiversity in organic apple orchards: A pan-European study Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Cahenzli, Fabian; Steinemann, Beatrice; Jamar, Laurent; Chor Bjørn, Mona; Porcel, Mario; Tasin, Marco; Telfser, Josef; Kelderer, Markus; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Orchards, as intensive cropping systems, often have low diversity of plant species, which limits the promotion of natural enemies for pest control. The implementation of agri-environmental schemes, such as flower strips, could enhance biological control. We developed perennial, multifunctional flower strips with native plant species. In the second and third year after sowing, plant diversity and ground cover between flower strips (FS) in the drive alleys and the spontaneous orchard vegetation in control plots (Cont) were compared in 19 experimental blocks of eight organic apple orchards in six European countries. On average 73.7% of the sown plant species were established and plant diversity of FS was on average 43% higher than in Cont. Multivariate...
